What this site is

Compare Health Outcomes Across All 3,144 US Counties

HealthByCounty is independently published data journalism. We take the public-health statistics that the federal government already collects — life expectancy, uninsured rates, primary-care access, air quality — and present them per county so a regular person can compare places to live, evaluate healthcare access in a region they're considering, or simply check how their own county stacks up nationally. Every statistic is attributed to its source.

Pick any county and you get its life expectancy, the share of adults reporting poor or fair health, the uninsured rate, primary-care and mental-health provider density per 100,000 residents, and a composite 0–100 Health Score that ranks the county against every other county in the United States. Use the search above, or browse by state.

Our data sources are the CDC County Health Rankings & Roadmaps program, the federal CMS NPPES provider registry, and EPA AirNow air-quality monitoring. The composite-score formula, weighting, and known limitations are documented on the methodology page. The site is edited by Evan Brooks, Data Editor, who is responsible for data ingestion, the scoring methodology, and the corrections process.
